Dan joined Markel in March 2010 as an Underwriter in our Hull & War team, progressing to Head of Class in 2019 and then to his most recent position as Director of Marine in 2023. He began his Marine insurance career at Allianz Cornhill in 1998, holding roles in Cargo, Marine Excess of Loss and Hull & War.

Since joining Markel, Dan has played a critical role in building the organisation’s Hull & War portfolio into a market leading position, fostering key relationships with customers and providing best-in-class underwriting services, ensuring clients continue receiving tailored coverage, especially through times of heightened geopolitical volatility. 

 Based at Markel’s London office, Dan is responsible for overseeing Marine short-tail classes – Hull, War, Cargo, Specie – within our Marine & Energy division. He is also an advocate for early careers talent and has been instrumental in mentoring and progressing junior members within his Marine underwriting teams.
