Synnøve Marie Kvam Strømsvåg´s work includes extensive original research into World War II neutrality and prize cases, including marine insurance and war risk issues. This research is not purely historical in nature, and includes how disputes and legal grey zones of early WWII continue to have relevance and show parallels to current incidents. The research is supported by the Norwegian Shipowners´ Mutual War Risks Insurance Association, and grants from Dr Juris Sjur Brækhus Fund.
Some of the findings from this work was presented at the King´s College Maritime History Seminar and the UK Maritime Heritage Forum in 2025. It includes fieldwork in Orkney, Scotland with the project organisation, X Marks the Spot, supported by the Norwegian Ministry of Defence and the Norwegian Armed Forces Museum grants for WWII cultural heritage studies.
Synnøve holds an MA with Merits in Conflict Studies from the University of Sydney and a BA First Class Honours in Archaeology from University College London. Her education includes Executive programs in negotiation, cultural intelligence and sustainable business practices from BI Norwegian Business School.
She is a member of The Explorers Club, serves on the Board of Directors of this global organisation headquartered in New York and chairs the Norway Chapter. She coordinates an international network of explorers providing multi-disciplinary crisis response and preparedness expertise. Synnøve is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (FRGS).
